Let’s talk about version numbers and consumer operating systems for a minute. Please bear with me, this may only make sense on the inside of my brain.

On October 25, 2001, Microsoft released Windows XP, aka NT 5.1. (Windows 2000 was NT 5. You don’t want to know what NT 4 looked like.)

At the time, the latest version of the Mac OS was 10.1 (Puma), released the month before, on September 25.

Windows Vista, aka NT 6.0, came many years later, on January 30, 2007.

In the interim between NT 5.1 and 6.0, Apple released three major versions of Mac OS X: 10.2 (Jaguar) in 2002, 10.3 (Panther) in 2003, and 10.4 (Tiger), in 2005.

Apple also released yet another update, 10.5 (Leopard), on October 26, 2007.

So by the end of 2007, Apple was on 10.5, and Microsoft was on 6.0, but Apple’s version number actually meant something iterative.

Suddenly, July 22, 2009 rolls around, and Microsoft releases what they publicly call “Windows 7” (I can’t find the link, but the fallacy of giving it the number 7 was well-documented by better-illustrated pundits at the time), but what is actually just NT 6.1.

Apple “follows” on August 28, with 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

While Microsoft is off doing their thing up in Redmond, Apple sneaks another one in, 10.7 (Lion), on July 20, 2011.

Wait, one more! July 25, 2012: 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

Finally, on October 26, Microsoft follows with what it calls Windows 8: NT 6.2?!

Good, now we’re all on the same “version eight” train. Here’s the thing: What’s next?

The Apple rumor mill is moving full-speed on the notion that the next version of OS X will be 10.9 (user agents never lie lol), and given Apple’s previous public statements, 10.9 will definitely released in 2013, likely sometime in the late summer. The question is, what does Apple do next? It seems highly unlikely that Apple will continue with the 10.x scheme, with 10.10. That’s just tacky. Do they reboot (har har) the franchise? Throw the version number out the window and pick a new naming scheme while they’re at it? Or do they take the “easy” way out, and just start calling it OS XI?

One thing’s for sure: Whatever Apple does next, and they will certainly be doing it in 2013 and 2014, Microsoft is going to follow suit, and it will be amusing to watch.

Microsoft’s odd practice of assigning arbitrary version numbers to codenames contrasts starkly against Apple’s practice of simply assigning codenames to logical version numbers.

In yet another post about the possibly stolen prototype fourth-generation iPhone, Jason Chen details the disassembly process of the device for Gizmodo.

Here’s an excerpt:

There are no markings on the board, but even so, the board was encased in metal all around so nothing could get through and would be very difficult to remove without breaking the device. Anyone trying to take this part off the phone would damage the device irreparably. On top of this metal, there was a thermal paste-like material. And on top of that, black tape. They really didn’t want people looking inside.

Despite their record and policies regarding prototype hardware, Apple obviously took the possibility of a leak very seriously, ensuring that should the device end up in the wrong hands, it would take a supreme level of skill and resources to force this device to reveal its innermost secrets before it could be recovered.

I don’t believe for a single moment that Apple planned for or wanted the device to be leaked, but I fervently believe that they were prepared for the possibility.
