This morning, the FedEx tracking page changed from “Delivered by 10:30 AM” to have no delivery date/time. I took it in stride, but then I got frustrated, and decided to give FedEx a call to find out exactly what the deal was. I got through to a human surprisingly quickly (thank you Mary!) and after giving her my tracking number and she informed me that iPhone orders were varying in delivery time (she said they were supposed to ship in the afternoon, not the morning) I was about to thank her and hang up, when…

In yet another post about the possibly stolen prototype fourth-generation iPhone, Jason Chen details the disassembly process of the device for Gizmodo.

Here’s an excerpt:

There are no markings on the board, but even so, the board was encased in metal all around so nothing could get through and would be very difficult to remove without breaking the device. Anyone trying to take this part off the phone would damage the device irreparably. On top of this metal, there was a thermal paste-like material. And on top of that, black tape. They really didn’t want people looking inside.

Despite their record and policies regarding prototype hardware, Apple obviously took the possibility of a leak very seriously, ensuring that should the device end up in the wrong hands, it would take a supreme level of skill and resources to force this device to reveal its innermost secrets before it could be recovered.

I don’t believe for a single moment that Apple planned for or wanted the device to be leaked, but I fervently believe that they were prepared for the possibility.

More Random Spewing on The Tablet/Event

It’s not going to have the word “tablet” anywhere in the name. The name will make perfect, “of course” sense once it is announced, and the name will likely be a common term that will be forever known as a name that changed computing as we know it.

Yeah, I went there.
The mockups are all foolishly wrong. There won’t be any tiny UI elements (like the OS X menu bar), nor will there be any reused UI elements like the Dock, although I’m sure it will have a reimagined element which echoes the Dock the same way the iPhone Dock does.
It will not be offered for sale immediately. I’ll go out on a limb and say that they’ll ship it in March or April, but only because the summer “release slot” is occupied by the iPhone.
Speaking of the iPhone, my prediction for the “one more thing” at the event is iPhone OS 4.0.
Steve is going to need the “one more thing” for 4.0, because his three talking points will be iLife ‘10 (with a completely new, never-before-seen application), the tablet, and something else (which I haven’t the foggiest clue as to what it is). iLife ‘10 will run on the tablet in a perfectly optimized fashion, not a slap job.
There will be no mention of any new iPhone hardware, but advances in the SDK will lend to speculation of new hardware, and a “surprise” release of the new device will debut at WWDC.

Random Thoughts on "The Tablet"

I didn’t feel like going all-out with a post, but here’s a quick, non-edited thought:

Thus far, every commentator (aside from the philosophical ones like John Gruber and the like) has focused solely on the “touchability” aspect of the device.

I don’t believe that this is the case. With the iPhone and then the iPod touch, Apple introduced multi-touch to the world, and yes, the new device will definitely feature a touch-centric interface with a large, gorgeous, high-definition display. But they will not choose to harp on the “touch” part of the device. Instead, the touch capability will just fade into the background, and become an “of course” part of the computing experience. The new device will focus on some new, never-before-imagined method of interaction with a computer of any kind.
